THE WAY OF THE CROSS
A reflective Via Dolorosa walk
by John Hay, Jr. (West Morris Street FMC, Indianapolis, IN)

The Stations, or Way of the Cross, is an ancient method of meditating upon Christ's Suffering and Death. Trace the path of Jesus from His condemnation to His body being laid in a tomb. Bring your senses, and most of all your heart, and walk the Way of the Cross. Take time to read, reflect, pray, and/or sing. Reflect on what Jesus' journey to the cross means for you, for all.

STATION TWELVE:Jesus dies on the Cross

Scripture: "At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice…"My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink… With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, 'Surely this man was the Son of God.'" Mark 15:33-39

Reflection: Alone and in anguish, Jesus my God dies on the cross for me. In this moment all creation stands still. Unthinkable loss! Unimaginable separation! Death seems to have won the day. Who can do anything but grieve and morn?

Prayer: O my Crucified Savior, as You found in me a cause worth dying for, grant that I may find in You the only cause worth living or dying for. Jesus, for You I live. Jesus, for You I die! Amen.

Song:
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
Save in the death of Christ my God.
All the vain things that charm me most
I sacrifice them to His blood.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all!
