Camp Brings in Neighborhood
by Marcie Huson, FMWM missionary to Hungary
"EVERYTHING!!"
When we asked a group of parents what their kids liked about camp, that
was their answer. We gathered each morning with silly songs and had Bible,
English and culture lessons. Then after lunch the children went to sports,
crafts and group games. It was a whirlwind week and some of the
kids, some of the parents and some of the team cried on Friday because
it was ending too soon!
Zita, the Bible teacher, said the kids were very responsive. And the team
from Ypsilanti, MI, did a great job. On the first day, I asked the kids
if they liked their leader (TJ, an 18-year-old American). They said (in
Hungarian), "We can't understand a thing he says!" So I told
them to teach him Hungarian! So every day at lunch, TJ had a one-hour
Hungarian lesson! On the third day, the kids stopped me and said, "He
speaks Hungarian very well now!"
One
of the best things about camp for me was that several people from the
neighborhood brought their kids. It's nice to begin to feel like we belong
here and have a real place in the community.
We had lots of answered prayer during the week, with only one day of light
rain, one lost tooth and minor injuries!! Sunday following camp we had
a "youth meeting" in the park and five of the older kids from
camp came. Please continue to pray that God will help seeds that were
planted to grow in peoples' lives, and that we will be able to deepen
relationships.
