Where the Children Go
by Ann Van Valin, director, International Child Care Ministries

LOVE, COMPASSION, ENCOURAGEMENT and ENRICHMENT describe our schools, which are operated in conjunction with the Free Methodist Church. The teachers are chosen and hired by International Child Care Ministries (ICCM) and representatives of the local Free Methodist church. The teachers must be Christians and exemplify Christlike lifestyles. The teachers meet academic requirements per ICCM and local education committee guidelines. The children also meet strict academic requirements. We want them to be well prepared to take the government exams and get their diplomas! The teachers love and nurture the children in their classrooms. In some countries we have secondary as well as primary schools. Our goal is for each sponsored child to obtain as much education as possible.

LOVE, COMPASSION, ENCOURAGEMENT and ENRICHMENT describe ICCM's study centers. Children go to study centers when they aren't in public school. If a child goes to school in the afternoon, they go to the study center in the morning. After breakfast, they have a Bible lesson, followed by singing, craft and playtime. A tutor helps them with their homework. Before leaving for school, they receive a hot lunch. Yum! They've received love, acceptance and help with different aspects of their lives. They're encouraged as they leave. If the child goes to the public school in the morning, they come to the study center at 1:00 p.m. A hot lunch is served followed by all the routines the children enjoyed in the morning hours at the study center.

LOVE, COMPASSION, ENCOURAGEMENT and ENRICHMENT describe our hostels. The children live with houseparents. They go home for vacations and, if they live close enough, for weekends. The children receive three meals a day in the hostels. They're provided an education, usually in a public school, as well as uniforms, books and schoolbags. At the hostel they learn Bible verses and sing Christian songs. Prayers and devotions are part of each day. A tutor provides help with lessons, making sure students understand all their subjects. This extra attention gives the children an advantage in their studies.

LOVE, COMPASSION, ENCOURAGEMENT and ENRICHMENT are also what a sponsor provides for a child when sponsorship begins and continues. The children love and appreciate their sponsors and often pray for them daily. They enjoy having a picture of their sponsor to show their friends. Sponsors are wonderful people.

To extend love and compassion that will encourage and enrich the life of a child — whether they attend school, a study center or live in a hostel — you can make a difference by becoming a sponsor. Consider choosing a child from the ICCM Web site (www.childcareministries.org) or contact the office by phone at 1-800-342-5531. Just $18.00 a month will accomplish so much for a young life.
