While
attending Roberts Wesleyan College as a full-time student, Roger
served as a Youth Pastor with the Calvary Church of the Nazarene
and then with the Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Rochester, NY.
Roger developed and coordinated a ministry to over fifty teenagers.
After
graduation from Roberts Wesleyan College, Roger served as the Associate
Pastor of the Immanuel Church of the Nazarene in Syracuse, NY. Roger
briefly served as the interim pastor during a transition period
between Senior Pastors.
Roger
took his first pastorate at the Bethel Church of the Nazarene in
Quincy, MA. During five years of ministry there the Sunday morning
worship average attendance went from 64 to 137, annual giving went
from $33,000 to $110,000 and an additional pastor was brought on
staff. In 1985 Roger received the Outstanding Young Man of America
award and commendations from the Mayor and City Council for his
community service and leadership. The Bethel Church of the Nazarene
owned and operated a Christian Nursery School with an annual budget
of $300,000.
In
1986, the Haskins' moved to New Bedford, MA where Roger became pastor
of the First Church of the Nazarene. During three years of ministry
over 100 new people came into the fellowship of the church, annual
giving went from $90,000 to $175,000, and Sunday morning worship
average attendance rose to 230.
While
pastoring on the New England District for the Church of the Nazarene,
Roger served as the District Secretary, District Coordinator and
Treasurer for the Pastors Medical Plan, and as District Coordinator
of the Annual Pastors and Spouses Retreat.
In
1989, Roger returned to the Genesee Conference of the Free Methodist
Church as pastor of the Ransomville, NY Church. While serving there
the church saw an increase in attendance in all areas of ministry,
reported an increase in giving by approximately $500 per week, added
a full-time Associate Youth Pastor, clarified their mission statement
and restructured their Official Board from 41 positions to 11 positions.
While serving in Ransomville, Roger served as the Secretary of the
Genesee Conference. Roger also served the community by volunteering
as an active member of the fire and ambulance company, and as a
certified cross-country coach at the local high school (whose teams
won two consecutive league championships).
In
1992 the Haskins moved to Syracuse, NY where Roger assumed the position
of Superintendent of the Susquehanna Conference. In the five years
since 1992, the Susquehanna Conference has seen a 17% growth rate
in morning worship average, increased their Conference Budget (without
increasing the formula percentage) by 19%, and initiated a Conference
Loan Fund with assets now totaling approximately $800,000.00. The
Conference Camp (Wildwood) is now debt free with a part-time Director
overseeing a self-supporting (and expanding) program and budget.
Roger has also implemented a Conference coaching system designed
to provide a peer mentoring network among the pastoral team. Since
1992, the Conference has also raised approximately $175,000 which
has been invested in the successful (re-)launching of church planting
projects in Liverpool, Palmyra and Utica.
While
serving as Superintendent, Roger has served on the Steering Committee
(as the vice-chairman) of Mission Northeast, chaired the Superintendents
Steering Committee for the Ministers Institute of the Northeast,
chaired the Lamson Scholarship and Colloquium Sub-Committee of the
Roberts Wesleyan College Ministerial Advisory Board, served as a
regional growth consultant for the Free Methodist Department of
Evangelism and Church Growth, and has been certified as a Church
Growth Consultant.
As
the Regional Superintendent of the mid-Atlantic area from July 1998
to July 1999, Roger led these Conferences in starting twelve new
churches, re-launching four existing but struggling churches, and
in preparing to start twelve additional churches in the coming year.
