Not long ago, Bishop Emeritus Gerald Bates and a number of other US guests were in Burundi visiting Hope Africa University. While there, they were privileged to visit areas where the relief supplies provided by the Bishops Famine and Relief Fund were being distributed. He tells of visiting one church where 1500 enthusiastic Christians worshipped in a large burnt brick church which they have erected in the past two years. This area had suffered dreadfully from the war, and now they were suffering from famine as flooding and heavy rains have washed out their crops. A food distribution was conducted. Every person, man, woman and child, received a portion of beans and a portion of corn, primarily for seed since this is the planting season, and for nourishment.
