The 60-Second Guide to Free Methodism

Celebrate John Wesley's 300th Birthday Next Sunday

John Wesley was born June 17, 1703. This is a golden opportunity for Free Methodist pastors to educate their congregation about the Wesleyan theology that is such a part of our Free Methodist heritage.

Here are some ideas that you could use in your church:

  • The World Methodist Council is encourging local churches to observing Wesley's 300th birthday on Aldersgate Sunday, May 25th. Use John Wesley's "Aldersgate Experience" to teach about the four components of Wesleyan theology. For more, see David McKenna's "What's So Important About Being Wesleyan?" (Jan/Feb 2003, Light and Life magazine)
  • Use all Wesleyan hymns that day and explain their significance.
  • Share background and history of the FMC as found in the Book of Discipline, pages 1-6 and 279-284. (Or click here to get to the Discipline online.)
  • Consider having your June 15th service outdoors in honor of Wesley's innovative preaching technique.

The Free Methodist Board of Bishops encourages this kind of creative endeavor as a part of maintaining our identity.
