Former
Congressman J.C. Watts (The following is a continuation of Matt Schnepf's interview with former Congressman J.C. Watts, which appears in the September/October 2004 Light & Life magazine.)
Graham has advised many a world leader, yet Watts sees him as an evangelist, not a politician. "He always understood that his role was not to be an activist or a political figure," Watts says. "His role was to be true to the Word of God." In turn, Graham has greatly impacted not only Christians but also people from all walks of life. "I have looked at his life and his ministry, digging into all the things that he's done," Watts says. "[Graham] is the epitome of what faith and service are all about. I doubt few people have any idea of the impact and the stand that he made and the effort that he put forth for race relations, human rights, racial healing and reconciliation." Graham's work in these areas dates back to the 1950s and '60s when people of his race and stature seldom publicly denounced segregation and racial discrimination. During those years many Christians let their politics steer their faith. Believing our faith should determine our politics, Watts appreciates how Graham's Christian convictions have navigated both his life and the positions he takes. While Christians know what the Scriptures say about race relations, marriage and the sanctity of life, we sometimes find it more convenient to adopt a worldview instead of a scriptural one. Bucking that trend, Graham remains faithful to his calling. "You can't help but admire that," Watts says. Learn
