Warm Hearts, Warm Welcome

Church kitchen -- a hub of love

“I’m impressed with our people,” says Pastor Rickey Reed of Smyrna FMC (TN). “They have the greatest impact on our visitors,” he adds. “Everyone feels such love.” In fact, many visitors say they’ve never felt so welcome at church.

According to Reed, Smyrna FMC is filled with committed people who are always ready to help and give. Fundraisers sponsored by the women have provided monies to redo the nursery, purchase banners for the sanctuary and equipment for the playground, and underwrite an ongoing nursing home outreach.

The youth group — also assisted by fundraisers — has an average mid-week attendance of 25 and more than 100 on Sundays. Two church vans transport community kids to the church for youth activities.

“We love to worship God,” says Reed. “And our fellowship and love for each other drives us.” One example of the caring spirit that permeates this church is its card ministry. Five volunteers (including a teen and an elderly person) regularly send notes of encouragement to others in the body. The stewards see that food is provided for folks getting discharged from the hospital; when someone passes away flowers are sent. “These are ministries of love,” says Reed. “The whole church is active,” he adds. “Everything is a ministry for God.

“I’m so proud of our people,” Reed says. “We grow through the fellowship — through caring, friendship and love. And word gets out. Everybody’s welcome.” His vision is to grow healthy people and a healthy church, helping people grow in God’s grace. Clearly, Reed’s tender heart is touching those around him. They, in turn, are extending loving hands to the lost and hurting.
