Adding Salt to the Political Shaker
(The following is a continuation of Sheryl Young's interview with Hal Conklin, which appears in the November/December 2005 issue of Light & Life magazine.

Q. San Diego, CA, (in your state) is the largest American city with an openly gay interim mayor (Toni Atkins, until the end of this year). How have you seen the acceptance of alternative lifestyles affect the ebb and flow of politics, and this and other “modern morality changes” trickling down to other facets of our lives?

A. California was settled as the Wild West, and in some respects it still is. I think it is a mistake to assume that “ worldly leaders” are going to act any differently from what the world has to offer. We need to be about being “salt and light” in the world, training Christians to enter public service.

Q. The actor Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) makes no bones about his belief in God when interviewed. Besides him and Mel Gibson, do you know of any other major Hollywood personalities trying to be a light for Christ?

A. I don't know that I could comment on actors and their personal beliefs. I do know that there are many Christians in all levels of film production, including producers who would have risked financial hardships in order to get stories to the screen that tell a Christian message.

Q. What kinds of tools have you used in your quality family time to encourage and instill biblical values?

A. Family time, especially meals, was an important building block for our family. In addition, we worshiped together as a family.

You Can Be Salty Too

Attend PTA meetings. Question extreme agendas. Average parents with traditional values can win school board elections.

Serve on your homeowners association. You may wind up writing newsletters, speaking before the city council or influencing people who need God.

Attend public hearings on controversial issues. They’re often held during business hours to discourage participation. Large groups who crowd the room can sway decisions.
