| Big happy church/family
Meadowood Christian School is a key ministry of Meadowood FMC (CO), providing “an excellent Christian education in a safe, nurturing, ministry focused environment.” Principal Linda Humiston (wife of Pastor Harlan) oversees the training-up of 108 students, only a quarter of them from the church. “We use excellent curriculum, so our students are about a year ahead of their public school counterparts,” says Humiston. The school has an extensive library and a good computer lab (both run by church volunteers). Started 30 years ago as a preschool, the ministry now accommodates children from 3 years to 8th grade and offers a before/after school program. “We are a safe haven in a spiritually dark place,” says Humiston, referring to the Denver Metro area. “We teach our students to be transformers,” she adds, “helping them discover how to uphold the good and stand against the bad without withdrawing from the culture.
“We are also a ministering place,” she adds. The students sponsor a child through International Child Care Ministries and run their own canned food drive. A monthly family night brings students and parents together for food and fellowship. The entire church is always invited, and monies raised through a nominal charge for the meal help provide needed items such as computer and playground equipment. An active Parent Teacher Church Organization (PTCO) facilitates a strong church/school connection. The Christ-centered school faces several challenges related to the current church facility — the building is old, enrollment is outgrowing the building’s capacity and the location isn’t readily visible. It seems likely that this wonderful ministry to children will ultimately lead to the church’s relocation and thus increasing further its impact on this Colorado community. |
