Shining light in Michigan

Sunday morning worship in beautiful Hastings FMC.

Last year, Hastings FMC (MI) had a growth spurt: a 10 percent increase in Sunday morning attendance, 12 first-time commitments, six baptisms, 18 new members and nine new families. Pastor Dan Graybill attributes much of the excitement to the church’s relocation in late February to a much more visible site.

The new, larger sanctuary allows the entire church to gather together for worship (they used to have two services), which in turn promotes unity in the body of nearly 200. This is a church of LIGHT: Loving (fellowship), Introducing people to Christ (evangelism), Glorifying God (worship), Helping those in need (serving) and Teaching God’s Word (discipleship).

The church ministers to all ages, has a thriving music ministry and offers practical teaching on Sunday mornings. The Cares Ministry helps members with physical and/or financial needs. A shepherding program assures that those who miss church are contacted and encouraged.

Sixty percent of the congregation is involved in small groups; new people are always encouraged to participate. Many of the groups meet every other week so as not to stress already full schedules.

“We have a strong missions emphasis, with increased giving every year,” says Graybill. There’s also a strong focus on prayer — an undergirding facet of the recent building campaign. The church is now on a 20-acre site; the leadership is exploring creative ways to use the property to reach the community. Long-range plans include a family life center with a gymnasium, ball fields and classrooms.

Just before moving, the church held a memorial service in its former location — honoring those who had served through the years. Now in their new facility, Hastings FMC looks forward to discovering new ways to shine into their community and the world.
