Christian Music: Do You Know What You're Missing?

What does the term “Christian music” bring to mind? Do you envision choir robes, hymnals and organs? Maybe a quartet of middle-aged men and women belting out harmonies to the tune of “ I’ll Fly Away” or “ I Saw the Light”? For some, gospel music is the first to come to mind, with its uplifting beats and powerful vocals. Maybe you even think of Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman and Amy Grant — artists who have become well-known in the Christian music industry. What you may not realize is that there is a world of music out there many Christians know nothing about.

Christian music has come a long way in the last decade, producing a variety of styles to fit every musical taste. From quiet worship to electric guitars, the industry has broadened its range of appeal, offering something for everyone. Christian music is no longer mainly geared toward adults, but now targets a younger generation as well with its edgy sound and energizing concerts. The best part of all is the positive message that points to God and leaves you feeling encouraged.

If you’ve never listened to Christian music or haven’t for a while, I urge you to discover what’s out there and get a feel for the new sounds coming from your brothers and sisters in Christian music. You may be surprised!

Get Started
Here’s a great way to start your search for Christian music. Listen to radio stations that play a variety of Christian music. This will give you a feel for what’s out there and help you find the style you enjoy. Below are two Web sites that will be helpful in finding a Christian radio station near you:

www.christianradio.com/search.asp

While listening to the station, jot down some of the artists you like and check out their CDs at the nearest Christian bookstore or any place that sells Christian music. These stores usually have demos you can listen to before buying the CDs, which is helpful if you’re new to the artists. Most artists also have Web sites where you can listen to clips of their songs or purchase their CDs.

Listen Online
If you cannot find a station near you, there are also many online Christian radio stations to choose from. Many of these stations even identify the song that is being played, along with a picture of the artist or their CD. This is also very helpful when searching for that artist or type of music that best fits your taste. Below are some of my favorite online Christian radio stations:

www.klove.com
www.air1.com
www.radiou.com
www.thekross.fm

And if none of these stations are what you’re looking for, here is a great Web site that lists different types of Christian music and the online station that corresponds:

So before dismissing Christian music altogether, do a little research and give it another chance. You may not realize what you’ve been missing!
